Description:
This
trip is a perfect introduction to the Amazon region combining
the best of nature and culture in central Amazônia.
Beginning with an overview of the city of Manaus and it's
history, and moving further out into the jungle, you will
experience both the modern and the traditional cultures
of Amazônia.
A
visit to the Opera House (Teatro Amazonas) and the Old Market
(made by the same engineer who designed the Eiffel Tower)
will take you back to the rubber boom era, when Manaus was
the wealthiest city in Brazil. You can quench your palette
with the exotic flavors of cupuaçú, açaí,
buriti, tucumã, camu-camu, guaraná, and other
fruits available at the many ice cream parlors and fruit
drink stands in town.
The
river life with manatees and pirarucus (one of world's largest
fresh water fish), the lakes with giant water lilies, and
the collections of fishes, butterflies and other insects
at the National Institute for Amazon Research (INPA) and
Museum of Natural Sciences of the Amazon will serve as an
introduction to the fauna and flora of Amazônia. At
the Old Market, Artíndia (handcraft shop) and Indian
Museum, you will get acquainted with the indigenous culture
still present in the Amazon. Finally, you will see the "Meeting
of the Waters", where the muddy waters of Rio Solimões
meet the black waters of the Rio Negro.
You
will navigate up the Negro River through Anavilhanas (the
world's largest river archipelagos) on your way to Jau National
Park, the world's largest protected area of tropical rainforest.
Besides being one of the top bio-diversity sites in Brazil,
Jaú National Park contains a dynamic geography typical
of the Amazon: black water floodplains, hills, streams,
"campaigns", upland forests and waterfalls. The best time
of the year to observe animals is during the dry season
in October when most of the wildlife converges in the shrunken
lakes and rivers. It is a little more difficult to spot
animals during the height of the flood season in May and
June. However, this is the best time of year to enjoy a
canoe ride through the canopy of the rainforest.
