At home in the jungle

Destination: Iratapuru River Extractivist Community of about 30 families. On the left banks of Jari River, at the mouth of Iratapuru River, few kilometers upstream from Santo Antonio Falls. 1 hour and 15 minutes boat ride from Monte Dourado, in the state of Pará. Their main economic activity is extraction of brazil-nuts and rubber.

Interest: cultural exchange, hikes in the forest guided by brazil-nut gatherers, boat rides on the rapids of Iratapuru River and Santo Antonio falls, brazil-nut cookie factory run by COMARU - Mixed Cooperative of the Iratapuru River Extractivist Producers, known as one of the most successful sustainable development projects in the Amazon.

Description: In our homestay program, you have the rare opportunity to spend time with a riverine family. This program promotes local culture and customs and encourages the preservation of the knowledge and traditions of the forest people. It also offers you a rare opportunity to get an insider's view of life in the backwaters and remote areas of the Brazilian Amazon.

Facilities: diesel generator providing electricity until 9:30 p.m., school building, public restrooms, fast boats (available for evacuation), and radio.

 

Housing and food: hammocks, few pieces of furniture, if any, latrine used as toilet, river bathing, gas lamp or candles. Meals consist of breakfast (bread, butter, milk, coffee and chocolate powder, fruits), lunch (rice and beans, pasta, meat, fish or chicken, tomato salad and fruit juice), and dinner (same as lunch).

Preparation: literature and briefings to minimize visitors' impact on the local cultures. The briefings are designed to enhance your understanding of local cultures and to help you better interpret local cultural values.

 

Includes: accommodation in family house; roundtrip transportation Monte Dourado/community; food and mineral water (optional, since the community has treated water); hammocks and mosquito nets; guided hikes in the forest; 2 day boat ride on the rapids of Iratapuru River; boat ride to Santo Antonio Falls on Jari River; bilingual guide, reading materials on Amazonian human ecology, cultural differences and similarities and culture shock; 10% conservation and social fee.
