Brazil
is the largest country in South America, geographically
larger than the continental United States, and the world's
fifth largest nation in physical size, exceeded only
by Russia, China, the United States, and Canada. |
With
90 percent of its territory lying between the equator and
the Tropic of Capricorn, Brazil is also the world's largest
tropical country. It contains two-thirds of the endangered
Amazon rain forest, a region representing 60 percent of
the national territory. The Amazon rain forest and Pantanal
(Great Wetlands) of Mato Grosso are two of the largest wildlife
reserves on earth.
Its
population is largely urban. Even the Amazon region is urbanized
with 70 percent of its 18 million people living in cities.
The Amazonian city of Manaus now has a population of 1.5
million and a paved highway to Venezuela.
Brazil
has at least fourteen cities with more than 1 million people.
Greater Rio de Janeiro's population totaled 10.3 million
in 1995. Greater São Paulo, with 18.8 million people,
is the world's third largest metropolitan area, after Tokyo
and Mexico City.
