Out of Workers
Wide screen/DV
The numbers speak loud and clear. Iowa faces
a population deficit by the year 2010. The state is aging and
its young are migrating out of state for work. In an effort to
address the dwindling workforce, the governor has recommended
what to some seems a drastic measure- recruitment of immigrants.
The idea has met stiff resistance and criticism. This 30 minute
documentary will explore the immigration debate as it plays out
within the context of a state's struggle for economic survival.
Why is Iowa suddenly at the forefront of the contentious immigration
issue? Who is involved and what is at stake? How might the outcome
influence how the debate is waged elsewhere? Told in first person
narratives, those embroiled in this bitter controversy explain
the impact it is having on their lives and on the future of their
home state.
